Urgent Care Team

Dr. Frank Arnold

Dr. Arnold received his undergraduate degree from Georgia Institute of Technology and his medical degree from Autonomous University of Guadalajara in 1981. He completed an internship at Northwest Hospital in Chicago and his residency at Resurrection Hospital Family Practice, also in Chicago. Dr. Arnold is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and holds a special interest in disease prevention. 

Dr. Arnold and his wife moved to Farmington in 2005 from Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  Dr. Arnold is a private pilot and enjoys flying in his free time. He also enjoys golfing and motorcycling.

Dr. Megan Grotefend

Dr. Grotefend graduated cum laude with her bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces in 1991. She attended medical school at the University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine in Albuquerque in 1995 followed by an Internship and Residency at Memorial Family Practice in South Bend, Indiana. She is Board-certified by the American Board of Family Practice.

Dr. Grotefend has been practicing medicine in the Four Corners since 1998. She was one of the founding members of Pinon Family Practice. She worked at San Juan Regional Medical Center’s urgent Care Clinic from 2000 to 2004. Recently, she spent two years living and practicing medicine in New Zealand. 

Dr. Grotefend and her husband have two children and a Golden Doodle. In her free time she enjoys meditation, mountain biking, road biking, physical fitness, Alpine Nordic tele mark and skate skiing, sailing and hiking.

Dr. Rob Klein

Dr. Klein received his Bachelor of Arts in English from DePauw University in 1992. Before he began medical school he achieved his EMT-B with certification to start IVs working for Telluride Ambulance from 1998-1999. He attended the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine, achieving his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2009. Dr. Klein completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Colorado in 2012 and is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. 

Dr. Klein is fluent in English and Spanish. He is an avid outdoorsman, having achieved certifications as Wilderness First Responder, Swift water Rescue Technician and Avalanche Rescue Certification. He was the Lead Instructor for the Telluride Adaptive Ski Program, Southern Ute Community Action Program and Colorado Outward Bound School. He has also bicycled to the Southern End of South America.

Dr. Sabrina Schmidt

Dr. Schmidt completed a combined Baccalaureate/MD program at the University Of Missouri School Of Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri in 1996. She completed a family practice residency program at Mercy Health System in Janesville, Wisconsin in 1999 and is a board certified family practice physician. She has been practicing in New Mexico since 2013 for San Juan Health Partners Urgent Care. Moreover, Dr. Schmidt is a 20 year veteran in medicine and has specialized in Urgent Care for 15 years.

Dr. Schmidt enjoys reading, church activities, and spending time with her husband Matt and their children. 

 

Dr. Shermann “Sugar” Singleton

Dr. Singleton graduated from the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine in 2003 and completed her residency in 2006, specializing in family medicine. She is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society; served as the Chief Resident at UNM Hospital; served as Vice President of the American Academy of Family Physicians, New Mexico Chapter; and is board certified in family medicine.

Dr. Singleton has a special interest in acute care, sports medicine, integrative medicine, pediatrics, newborn care, and women’s health. She was born and raised in Farmington and her family has been a part of the community for the last five generations. She has three children. She enjoys skiing, boating, four-wheeling, traveling, and scuba-diving.

 

Dr. Robert Underwood

Dr. Underwood attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York where he received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Management. He served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1987 to 1991. After that, he served in the South Carolina Army National Guard until 2004. He attended the University Of South Carolina School Of Medicine in Columbia, where he achieved his Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Underwood completed an Emergency Medicine residency at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and has extensive experience providing lifesaving care in a high-volume Emergency Department in Virginia.

Passionate about leadership and making a difference, Dr. Underwood completed a Master of Science in Health Care Delivery from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He is also a Certified Physician Executive from the American Association for Physician Leadership. He has served in several medical leadership roles, and currently serves as Chief Medical Officer at San Juan Regional Medical Center. 

Dr. Underwood will soon be publishing a book with Leadership Compass for Healthcare Professionals as a working title. He loves traveling with his wife, Gina, and enjoys Chicago Cubs baseball.

Kaarlo Alakoski, PA-C

Mr. Alakoski holds a Bachelor of Science in Medical Science and Physician Assistant Certificate from the Des Moines University's College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has been a part of the San Juan Health Partners Urgent Care Family since 1998, providing all aspects of urgent care to all ages of patients. Mr. Alakoski is a Fellow member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and a member of the New Mexico Academy of Physician Assistants. He speaks Finnish, Swedish and English. 

 

Monica Nagahiro, CNP

Ms. Nagahiro earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing as well as her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. She also holds an Associate Degree in Nursing from Pueblo Community College.

Ms. Nagahiro has spent her nearly 25-year nursing career at San Juan Regional Medical Center. She began as a nurse in the Emergency Department, then spent several years as a flight nurse before joining the Cardiac Cath Lab team. After a decade dedicated to cardiac care, Ms. Nagahiro became a multi-clinic manager, navigating the COVID-19 crisis on the front lines of San Juan Health Partners Urgent Care. Most recently, she served the organization as Clinical Quality Coordinator. Thanks to her dedicated efforts to adhering to gold standard protocols, San Juan Regional Medical Center earned the New Mexico Hospital Association’s Quest for Excellence Award.

Christi Burge, CNP

Christi is a proud Aztec High School graduate. She attended San Juan College, receiving her associate’s degree in Nursing in 1993. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in 2002, followed by a master’s as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Colorado at Denver in 2008.

Christi worked as a nurse and clinical coordinator on the Medical Floor at San Juan Regional Medical Center for eight years, and most recently comes to us from the Denver area with 10 years of Urgent Care experience. She and her husband have two grown sons and six grandsons. 

 

Melissa Gladden, FNP 

Ms. Gladden earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of New Mexico. She spent 20 years working as a Registered Nurse at San Juan Regional Medical Center, where she gained experience in a wide variety of areas, including Day Surgery, Pediatrics, Case Management, and on the Medical Unit. She received her Master of Science in Nursing with a Family Nurse Practitioner concentration also from UNM.

 

 

 

Anna Buck, FNP 

Ms. Buck received an Associates of Science in Nursing from San Juan College, where she was an Academic Excellence Award recipient as well as a Foundation Scholarship recipient. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Eastern New Mexico University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2015. She received a Master of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain College of Nursing in Illinois in 2019. She is a member of the National Honor Society of Nursing.

Ms. Buck has spent more than a decade serving patients in the Four Corners as a nurse at San Juan Regional Medical Center and San Juan Regional Rehabilitation Hospital.

Genevieve Willis, MSN, FNP-C

Genevieve holds both a Master of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, graduating magna cum laude. She earned an associates degree in Nursing from San Juan College, where she was a Distinguished Scholar and Merrion Master Scholar.
