Childbirth Education Classes

San Juan Regional Medical Center is committed to providing the support services and education expecting parents need to make sure their baby gets the best start in life. We offer a series of complimentary Childbirth Preparation classes that cover a range of topics important for expecting mothers and their families.

Bump Day: It covers breathing strategies, tips for laboring at home, when to come to the hospital and what to expect once you get to the hospital as well as medical interventions such as an epidural. Register for the October 21 class.

Labor and Pain Management: This is a single class that covers one of the most feared aspects of having a baby – the pain associated with labor and delivery. Register for the October 18 class.

Newborn Care Basics: The class is intended for both parents or any caregivers of an infant to learn essential information. Register for the October 28 class.

Breastfeeding Basics: This course covers all the basics of breastfeeding. It is intended for the first-time mom or as a refresher for a mom who has already experienced breastfeeding. Register for the October 15 class.

Postpartum Care and Concerns: This class covers what to expect for both mom and baby during the postpartum period which extends into the first year after the birth of the baby. Register for the October 29 class.

Shaken Baby Syndrome Informational Course: This class covers all the essentials parents need to know about Shaken Baby Syndrome.  It covers how and why SBS happens and how to prevent it. Register for the October 21 class.

Just the Essentials of Baby Care: This three-hour course will focus on the basics of breastfeeding and caring for your newborn.  It will focus on what to expect the first month from your newborn and as you get started breastfeeding.  It is intended for first-time parents or as a refresher course for anyone who is interested. Register for the October 30 class.

Childbirth and Newborn Care Crash Course: This intensive and fast-paced class covers everything about what to expect during the third trimester of pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum concerns, breastfeeding basics and newborn care. Register for the October 25 class.

Let's Talk About Sex - Sex Education for Teens 14-17: This class is intended for teens ages 14-17 years old and will be offered separately for male and female students to encourage open dialogue and promote an environment where questions are freely asked without embarrassment or concerns regarding the opposite sex.  Topics covered will include basic anatomy, puberty, how pregnancy happens and is prevented through various contraception options, sexually transmitted infections/diseases and the importance of fostering healthy relationships, resisting sexual pressure and protecting dreams and goals for the future through safe sex practices and abstinence. Register for the Girls Session on November 5.

Change Ahead: A Class about Puberty for Tweens: This class focuses on the basics of what happens to the human body, both male and female, during puberty.  This time represents the changes that take place as the body changes from a child’s body and prepares to become an adult body, capable of reproduction. This class is intended for tweens ages 10-13 years of age. Register for the Girls Session on November 4 or Boys Session on November 6.

Meet Our Educator

 

Kathy Coleman

Kathy has a wealth of educational experience, including Science Teacher and Science Department Chair at Bloomfield High School, as well as multiple positions at Dzilth-na-o-dith-hle Community Grant School. Kathy holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, a master’s degree in Secondary Science Education from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, and an Occupational Health and Safety Certificate from San Juan College.
