Metabolic and Bariatric Institute

Commonly Asked Questions

Do I need to lose weight before surgery?

It depends on what your insurance requires. Most insurances require some amount of weight loss prior to surgery. Our team can help you come up with a plan to lose the weight needed before your procedure.

Do I have to stop smoking before surgery?

Yes. You cannot use any tobacco products for at least two months before surgery, and we ask that you continue to avoid tobacco after your procedure. It increases the risk of complications both before and after surgery.

I want to have a baby. Is bariatric surgery right for me?

If you are hoping to become pregnant immediately, bariatric surgery is probably not right for you. Experts recommend that women should not become pregnant for at least 24 months after surgery.

What support do you offer after my surgery?

After you go home, you will have regularly scheduled follow up visits with your team at the Metabolic and Bariatric Institute. We are here as part of your extended support system to answer your questions as you work toward your long-term health and wellness goals.

What can I do if I decide bariatric surgery is not for me?

We are pleased to offer medical management for weight loss. This includes prescribing weight loss medications and helping you with behavior and lifestyle changes supported by our team of experts.
