Why We're Different

Our Community-Owned Structure

San Juan Regional Medical Center is proudly and uniquely community owned. As a non-profit organization, our hospital is governed by a corporation made up of representatives from more than 90 local non-profit groups across San Juan County. These include civic clubs, churches, fraternal and veterans’ organizations, and other community-based groups—each eligible to appoint two representatives to serve on the hospital corporation.

This corporation convenes quarterly, providing vital leadership and direction. From within its membership, a 12-member Board of Directors (or 13 with the immediate past chairperson) is elected at the corporation’s annual meeting to serve staggered three-year terms. This board is responsible for the overall governance and strategic oversight of our hospital.

Our structure reflects deep community roots, dating back to 1921, when a group of local leaders—C.C. Mumma, George Allen, Al Dustin, Troy King, Harry Baldwin, J.A. Gooding, and Sam Lancaster—came together to purchase and operate the original hospital building. With no compensation, they personally financed supplies and rallied church and civic organizations to raise funds, laying the foundation for the community-centered mission that still drives us today.

This enduring model ensures that San Juan Regional Medical Center remains accountable to the people we serve—our neighbors, our families, and our community.

Community Benefit: Investing in Local Health

As a community-owned, non-profit hospital, San Juan Regional Medical Center is deeply committed to improving the health and wellbeing of the Four Corners region. Our community benefit efforts include free health education, support groups, wellness fairs, flu shot clinics, low-cost blood screenings, scholarships, and direct donations. We also provide health programming in the Navajo language through local radio to reach underserved populations with vital wellness information.

We assess community health needs annually and act on those findings—expanding physician access, participating in public healthcare reporting for transparency, and continuously evolving our programs to serve you better. This is how we live our mission every day: by putting our community first.
