Monday, November 10, 2025 San Juan Regional Medical Center Honors Caregivers with DAISY® and BEE Awards

San Juan Regional Medical Center is proud to recognize four outstanding caregivers for the meaningful impact they have made on patients’ lives. Nurses Sara Berry and Laurel Martin are the newest recipients of the DAISY® Award, and Kathy Coleman and Evette Craine are the first ever recipients of our new BEE Award.

DAISY® AWARD

The DAISY® Award is a prestigious international recognition program celebrating nurses for the skillful and compassionate care they provide patients every day.

Sara Barry

Sara Barry is a nurse on our Childbirth Unit. She was nominated by not one, but two new moms who immediately felt comforted by Sara’s presence during their deliveries. Both noted that Sara made their experiences less stressful by sharing her knowledge, providing support to them as well as their spouses, and offering reassurances and encouragement during times of uncertainty. One new mom said that she couldn’t have done it without Sara, writing that “Sarah truly embodies what it means to be a labor and delivery nurse — compassionate, strong, knowledgeable, and deeply committed to her patients. I will never forget her, or the support she gave me during the most intense and vulnerable moment of my life.”

Laurel Martin

Laurel Martin is a nurse with the wound care team. She was nominated by a patient who had been injured in an accident and needed regular wound care. Laurel advocated for the patient to stay in the hospital instead of being moved to a nursing home, because the patient needed specialized wound care that they would not be able to receive at another facility. “Without Laurel, I would not be on the positive healing path I am currently on. I truly believe I could have lost my left foot had Laurel not been adamant about the care I needed,” the patient said in their nomination.

We are always seeking stories of the ways our nurses deliver exceptional care. You can nominate a nurse for a DAISY® award here: https://www.sanjuanregional.com/formbuilder/forms.aspx?formid=91863&sid=1.

BEE AWARD

The BEE Award recognizes Patient Care Services support staff for the extraordinary care they provide, Being Exceptional Every day. The BEE Award a companion to the DAISY® Award for nurses. Just as the daisy cannot thrive without the bee, nurses cannot succeed without the outstanding teamwork provided by their fellow healthcare professionals.

Kathy Coleman

Kathy Coleman is the patient educator on our Childbirth Unit – but her coworkers say she is so much more than that. She not only schedules and teaches a wide variety of educational classes for patients and their families but also makes a point to follow all her students through their pregnancy and delivery. She is an especially helpful resource for pregnant teens, going out of her way to support them and their families, providing education and resource information and making sure they don’t feel alone. “The BEST thing about hearing Kathy speak to patients and families is how she is so good at telling the truth in love,” said Childbirth Center nurse Bonnie Greene, who nominated Kathy. “She has a way of using her compassion mixed with her 'teacher voice' to make hard conversations go smoothly.” In addition, Kathy is a valued member of the Childbirth Unit who encourages others, lifting her coworkers’ spirits through the many ways she shows she cares.

Evette Craine

Evette Craine is a critical care tech in the Intensive Care Unit who exemplifies the role of a caregiver in every sense of the word. Her coworkers agree that she is an irreplaceable part of the ICU team – in fact, she was nominated by four different coworkers for the BEE award. She is a vigilant patient advocate and team player who anticipates needs, creates efficient workflows, and strives to improve care delivery to help the entire department succeed. “Evette Craine does not just perform her role—she elevates it. She brings compassion, intelligence, and commitment to every patient interaction and team collaboration,” said ICU Manager Adrian Cordova in his nomination. “Evette's kindness makes such a lasting impact on everyone around her. She brings happiness and comfort to patients in some of the most fragile moments of their lives,” added ICU nurse Alissa Candelaria.

We invite our community to help us recognize our support staff for Being Exceptional Every day by nominating them for a BEE Award. The nomination form is available online at https://www.sanjuanregional.com/bee-award/nomination.
