Thursday, May 21, 2026 San Juan Regional Medical Center Caregivers Honored with DAISY and BEE Awards

San Juan Regional Medical Center is proud to honor four exceptional caregivers with DAISY? and BEE awards. The DAISY award is an international recognition for extraordinary nurses and the BEE award is its companion for healthcare professionals who are Being Exceptional Every day.

DAISY? Honorees

Sara Barry is a Childbirth Center nurse who is a repeat Daisy award winner. She was nominated by a former patient who had experienced a difficult delivery and recovery. “Your compassion, your care, your calmness kept me grounded,” the patient said about Sara. “Your knowledge and steady presence made all the difference that day. Because of YOU, I decided to become a nurse.” Thanks to Sara’s care, that former patient is now a Labor and Delivery nurse, giving her patients the same sense of safety and support that Sara provided to her.

Wendy Joe is a Nephrology Unit nurse who is also a repeat Daisy award winner. She was nominated by two families for the care she provided their loved ones. One family mentioned how grateful they were for Wendy’s knowledge, humor and kindness. The patient’s wife said
“it was great to have a consistent nurse in which my husband was able to bond with, which I believe helped him improve his overall health.” Another family called Wendy a “fresh breath of air” who lit up the room and made them feel welcome. They appreciated the education she provided during the patient’s stay, as well as upon discharge so they could continue the care at home.

BEE Honorees

Ranada DuPonte is an Advanced Lactation Consultant on the Childbirth Unit who is being recognized for her extraordinary compassion, professionalism, and commitment to supporting families during one of the most vulnerable times of their lives. When a caregiver’s family member was struggling to breastfeed after giving birth, Ranada was a source of support. Her clinical expertise and knowledge were invaluable, but what truly set Ranada apart was the genuine care, empathy, and reassurance she provided. “Ranada helped my sister feel heard, validated, and reassured that she was doing the right thing. I know this level of dedication and compassion is not unique to my sister’s experience but is something Ranada consistently provides to every family she serves,” the nomination said.

Leshawna Chee is a Patient Care Tech who is part of our Professional Resource Team. She was nominated for demonstrating exceptional compassion, teamwork and dedication to patient care. During a recent shift on the Medical Unit, she never allowed a call light to go unanswered, always taking the initiative to check on patients and ensure their needs were met. Even when others responded to a patient call, Leshawna still took the time to check in with her teammates to see if they needed support or assistance. “Leshawna didn't just take care of her patients; she took care of the team,” nurse Connie Grijalva said in her nomination.
