Infant formula can be the sole source of nutrition for infants who are not breastfed, and therefore it is strictly regulated by the FDA to make sure it has certain nutrients. Homemade infant formula recipes have not been evaluated by the FDA and may not contain the proper nutrient levels vital to an infant’s growth. In fact, the FDA has recently received reports of infants who were hospitalized with low calcium levels after being fed homemade infant formula.
The FDA is advising parents and caregivers not to make or feed homemade infant formula to infants. There are serious health and safety concerns including potential contamination and inadequate amounts of critical nutrients that could lead to serious, life-threatening consequences such as severe nutritional imbalances or foodborne illnesses.
Parents or caregivers of infants who have consumed homemade infant formula should contact their healthcare provider and report any symptoms to their local Health Department. In Farmington, the Health Department’s office number is 505.327.4461. For more information, please visit the FDA's website.
