Monday, June 9, 2025 San Juan Regional Medical Center Nurse Honored with DAISY® Award

San Juan Regional Medical Center is proud to recognize our nurses for the exceptional care they provide patients. Join us in congratulating Kandi Costa, a nurse on our Childbirth Center, as our latest DAISY® Award recipient. This prestigious international recognition program celebrates nurses for the compassionate care they provide patients every day.

Kandi earned the DAISY® Award for the exceptional care she provided to a first-time mom during her labor and delivery. The patient was being induced and understandably had some anxiety. Fortunately, she had Kandi for a nurse.

“She helped me from the moment I walked in the door to the moment I walked out. She always made sure I was taken care of and never left me wondering what was going on,” the patient wrote in her nomination letter.

The patient said there were many times during her labor that Kandi’s care stood out. The way Kandi explained the labor process was especially helpful, and the patient kept playing the advice over in her head. She said every tip Kandi gave her worked. At one point, the baby’s oxygen dropped and caused the family quite a scare. Kandi was able to explain what was happening, get it under control, and comfort everyone. When the patient experienced painful contractions, Kandi showed her partner how to use counter pressure to ease the pain, which helped greatly until the patient could get an epidural.

“She truly made everything so peaceful and gave me the labor and delivery experience I dreamed of. She was the best nurse I have ever had,” the patient said.

“All new moms are my favorite. I have the privilege of helping them and guiding them. I am so happy to be here to provide them with support,” Costa said. “For them to take the time out of their busy new life with their babies to recognize me just means the world.”
