San Juan Regional Medical Center is an acute care hospital in the Four Corners region with 198 licensed beds. Week 1 - May 14, 2022

Topic 1: Course Introduction. Introduction to Lamaze Healthy Birth Practice, HBP #1 (Letting Labor Begin on It's Own)

Class Objective: Parents will be able to describe the goals of Lamaze education and platform for this course, as well as describe the functional changes and characteristics of pregnancy and their application to labor onset.

Topic 2: Healthy Pregnancy, Labor Preparation, HBP #2 (Freedom of Movement During Labor) 

Class Objective: Parents will be able to describe features and benefits of a “healthy pregnancy” as defined through nutrition, movement, lifestyle choices. As well as demonstrate techniques of movement that will aide in labor. 

Week 2 - May 21, 2022

Topic 3: Stages of Labor, HBP #3 (Continuous Support) 

Class Objective: Parents will be able to identify the various stages of labor and how they differer. They will also be able to verbalize their desires for what continuous support looks like to them as well as verbalize various options that are available to them. 

Topic 4: Stages of Labor Continued, HBP #4 (Avoiding Routine Interventions)

Class Objective: Parents will continue to depend their understanding of the different stages of labor as well as describe when and where they could potentially expect to see and experience interventions. Parents will also be able to recognize what interventions exist and how to communicate with their provider about these interventions. 

Week 3 - May 28, 2022

Topic 5: Giving Birth and What to Expect, HBP #5 (Avoid giving birth on your back, pushing)

Class Objective: Parents will be able to identify the last stages of labor, as well as demonstrate options for positions to give birth in. Parents will also be able to demonstrate the differences between directed pushing and spontaneous pushing. 

Topic 6: Birth Day, Baby Friendly Environment, HBP #6 (Keeping your baby with you)

Class Objective: Parents will be able to describe the benefits for mother and baby when there is not separation after birth. Parents will also be able to describe what a baby friendly environment looks like. 

Week 4 - June 4, 2022

Topic 7: Breastfeeding Basics, Resources, Baby Care 101

Class Objective: Parents will be able to obtain physical resources for breastfeeding support in their community, as well as develop a written plan for breastfeeding support when at home. Parents will be able to demonstrate the basic care of newborns and determine further support needed for after birth. 

Topic 8: Series Wrap Up, Putting it all into play, HBP Review

Class Objective:Parents will be able to “walk through” the birthing process from onset of labor (identifying the onset of labor), practice integrating the support mechanisms learned, as well as finalize the options that they would want to have present for their birth experience. 

 

Class will be held in the Childbirth Classroom located on the 5th floor of San Juan Regional Medical Center

You many bring ONE support person. Masks are required.
