Childbirth Education Class Description

Classes have been suspended until further notice due to COVID-19.

When registering online the website displays classes a month at a time. Upcoming classes can be viewed by expanding the calendar dates. Expecting families are encouraged toregister for classes early to ensure placement in the class of their choice. Please register for classes three to four months before your due date.   • Healthy Pregnancy Class—by appointment: It is never too early to develop healthy practices in pregnancy. This class will cover the physical and emotional changes of pregnancy, common tests and procedures, nutrition, exercise and relaxation as well as information on how to navigate the health care system. To register, contact Pip Howard, RN at 505.609.2134. Location: Childbirth Center Classroom, San Juan Regional Medical Center.
 
  • Childbirth Preparation Series: There are six classes in this series. This class invites first time moms and their families to learn the basics of a healthy pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum experience. Topics covered will include comfort measures, breathing, relaxation, the stage and phases of labor, support person skills, medical interventions in labor, and postpartum care. Emphasis is placed on having a healthy pregnancy, understanding the physical and emotional challenges of labor and delivery, and getting to know other pregnant women and families. Please register one person per family. If registration is full when you wish to take the class, please contact the childbirth educator to make alternative plans for childbirth preparation. The series includes Breastfeeding 1: The Basics, and Baby Care 101, and a tour of the Childbirth Center. Please do not register for these classes in addition to the Childbirth Preparation Series. Classes are from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.  Location: Center for Workforce Excellence at 800 West Maple, Farmington, NM.
 
  • Accelerated/Refresher Childbirth Preparation: The four hour childbirth education “crash course” covers the stages and phases of labor, comfort measures and support person skills.Content does not include breastfeeding or baby care skills. Participants are encouraged to enroll in those classes separately, if desired. Please register pregnant mom only. If registration is full when you wish to take the class, please contact the childbirth educator Pip Howard, RN at 505.609.2134 to make alternative plans for childbirth preparation. Class is offered one Saturday every other month, 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Location: SJRMC Childbirth Center Classroom, 5th Floor..
 
  • Breastfeeding 1: The Basics-This class supports breastfeeding mothers and their babies and families who love them. The class is geared for women in all stages of pregnancy as well as those who want to review the basics of breastfeeding. Topics include benefits of breastfeeding, expectations the first week, breastfeeding in the hospital, positioning, and other common concerns. Please register one person per family. If registration is full when you wish to take the class, please contact the childbirth educator at 505.609.2134, to make alternative plans for breastfeeding preparation. 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., one Saturday every other month. Location: Childbirth Center Classroom, San Juan Regional Medical Center. Please note: both Baby Care and Basic Breastfeeding are included in the Childbirth Series Class. Please do not register for these in addition to the Series Class.
 
  • Breastfeeding 2: Maintaining Milk Supply: This class is for mothers of newborns who will be returning to work or school. Topics include use of breastpumps, storage safety basics, managing breast and bottle feeding and communicating with care providers and employers. Please call the Childbirth Educator at 505.609.2134 or Breastfeeding Support Services at 505.609.6484 to arrange a time to meet. Location: Childbirth Center Classroom, San Juan Regional Medical Center.
 
  • Car Seat Safety- Three out of four child safety seats are used incorrectly: Join us for this two hour class to learn how to select and install the right safety seat for your child. Instructors are certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. Bring your car seat and instruction manual if already purchased as well as your vehicle’s owner manual. Please register just one person per family, but bring as many as desired. 10:00 a.m.- 12 noon, one Saturday every other month.  Location: SJRMC Childbirth Center, 5th floor. Farmington, NM.
 
  • Sibling Class: This class is for brothers and sisters of infants delivered at San Juan Regional Medical Center. It’s designed for children age three to eight years. Children will be shown a film and taken on a tour. 3:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., one Saturday every other month.  Location: Childbirth Center Classroom, San Juan Regional Medical Center.
 
  • Baby Care 101:  In this class we will discuss what to expect when you meet your newborn for the first time. This includes skin-to-skin contact, rooming in, diapering, swaddling, safe sleep practices, and more.  We will also discuss infant soothing, baby wearing, normal newborn behavior, and choosing a doctor for your newborn. Please register one person per family. If registration is full when you wish to take the class, please contact the childbirth educator at 505.609.2134, to make alternative plans. Class is held from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., one Saturday every other month. Location: Childbirth Center Classroom, San Juan Regional Medical Center. Please note: both Baby Care and Basic Breastfeeding are included in the Childbirth Series Class. Please do not register for these in addition to the Series Class.
