Walk Your Way to a Healthy Heart

The path toward better health starts with a single step. Walking is one of the easiest things you can do to keep your heart healthy. Now that spring’s here and the weather is warming up, it’s the perfect time to start!

Walking is a great way to improve your health and fitness because it’s something most of us already do every day. You can do it almost anywhere, at any time. In fact, it’s the most popular form of physical activity among U.S. adults.

Adults should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week. Going for a walk for even a few minutes multiple times a week can add up and improve your health.

Benefits of walking include:

- A reduced risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol

- Improved mood and reduced stress

- More energy and improved stamina for everyday activities

- Tones your muscles, including your heart

Step up for better health:

- Try to walk every day. Gradually increase the length of your walks over time

- Explore your community! Check out the amazing trails near you. The City of Farmington has an amazing Walking Trail Guide with maps and information on each park’s trail distance. Check it out online or pick up a printed copy by contacting the city’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs administration office at 505.599.1197.

- Be sure to talk to your doctor before beginning any new fitness routine.
