Breastfeeding
Preparation During Pregnancy
The Childbirth Center’s perinatal education team holds free monthly classes to prepare expecting families for the new baby. The “Breastfeeding Basics” class covers the benefits of breastfeeding and the process of how to get good start after your baby is born.
If the new mother will be returning to work or school—or anticipates a short separation from her baby—she and her baby can still benefit from continued breastfeeding. The “Maintaining Milk Supply: Pumping and Storing Breast Milk” class addresses how to choose and use a breast pump, handle and store breast milk, and other tips for caregivers who will be bottle feeding the breastfed baby.
Your Hospital Experience
Our team works hard to provide you the most supportive delivery, breastfeeding, and postpartum care. All of our nurses are trained to help new mothers and babies with breastfeeding. We practice “rooming in” to keep families together 24 hours a day throughout their hospital stay. Infants born by Cesarean section are also encouraged to breastfeed soon after birth. Mothers will receive many tools and support to help their baby latch and learn how to tell if their baby is getting enough milk.
Lactation Consults
For mothers and babies who face challenges in establishing or maintaining breastfeeding, our staff includes nurses who are specially trained as Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultants to provide more intensive support. Consults are provided by the patient’s request and/or in collaboration with the primary care doctor’s input and orders.
We will weigh your baby and observe a breastfeeding session to help solve any difficulties you may encounter. There is no fee for lactation consults. Recommended feeding items are available in the hospital gift shop at standard retail prices.
