April is Donate Life Month and San Juan Regional Medical Center encourages everyone to consider the selfless act of organ donation.

New Mexico residents can sign up with the Donate Life Registry when applying for or renewing a driver’s licenses or ID cards at the New Mexico Department of Motor Vehicles, and nearly 900,000 New Mexicans have done so. This is great, but the need is great also.

More than 100,000 men, women and children nationwide, including 600 New Mexicans, are currently on the national organ transplant list, and every 90 minutes one person dies while waiting for a donated organ.

Organ donation facts:

  • A single individual’s donation of organs can save up to eight lives and donation of tissue can enhance the lives of up to 50 people in need.
  • Over 28,000 lives were saved through organ transplants and one million lives enhanced through tissue transplants in the United States last year.
  • There is no cost to the donor or donor's family for donation. The donor family pays only for medical expenses incurred before death and for funeral expenses.
