Pediatric Unit
Newborn to 18 Years Old
It might help your child to have some familiar things around him/her. You are welcome to bring a favorite toy, book, blanket or other object that is comforting during this stressful time.
However, the presence of a parent or significant other is the most important emotional benefit you can give your child. This doesn't mean that you should be present during every test and procedure, because it isn't always in the best interests of the child or parent. We do feel it is important for a familiar and loving person to be there after a test or procedure to embrace, console and reassure your child.
As a parent you add a valuable element of familiarity to your child's hospital setting. Touching and play at bath time, feeding habits and techniques, or special bedtime stories and rituals can help reassure and comfort your child.
We understand that parents have many other obligations--to job and other children. And, it's certainly not required that you stay with your child. We do feel your presence and support is of great value to your child--something we cannot duplicate. For that reason, we encourage you to visit as often as possible. Perhaps there are other adults your child is fond of who could spend some time with him in your absence: grandparents, an aunt, uncle, baby-sitter or neighbor. (The "parent substitute" must be at least 18 years old and designated by you).
When you leave your child, we encourage you to be honest. Tell him that you are leaving, but emphasize you will be back and name a time or event that your child can associate with your return.
You know your child better than anyone else. Although we have a highly trained staff at the in Pediatrics, you are still your child's most important caretaker. We value your observations and concerns and will ask you many questions during the course of your child's stay.
