Nursing

Nurse in Scrubs
San Juan Regional Medical Center's Nursing Department is committed to high quality patient care. The nurses practice their profession using the values of respect for the individual, advocacy for the patient, and quality service. Compassionate patient care is delivered by nurses trained in today's technology. The nursing units are staffed with licensed nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These nurses are responsible for planning and evaluating nursing care, for delivering treatments, administering medication, starting intravenous (IV) lines, and other types of patient care. Nurse's Aides, also members of the nursing team, provide basic patient care such as bathing and feeding.

The nursing units include Childbirth Center, Pediatrics, Intensive Care Unit, Nephrology / Urology, Medical and Surgical services, a Skilled Nursing Facility, and an Outpatient Nursing Unit. Our nurses are here to provide high quality nursing care to help patients recuperate quickly and live healthier lives.

Childbirth Center/Obstetrics Visiting Guidelines

While patients are in labor, visitors may see them in the labor room 24 hours a day, one visitor at a time, and should be limited to 30 minutes. Fathers have priority over other visitors at all times. After the birth, fathers may visit 24 hours a day. Visiting hours for all others are from 11:30am until 8:00pm. For consideration of our patients, visitors should limit their stay to 15 minutes, with no more than two persons at a time. To further protect our patients, visitors who are ill should not visit the Childbirth Center. No non-family visitors under age 13 are permitted, however, siblings of the baby may visit once a day for 30 minutes, and must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

General Visiting Guidelines

At San Juan Regional Medical Center we welcome guests and understand the important role friends and family play in the recovery of our patients. Our guidelines for visiting are designed to be in the best interest of our patients and maintain overall safety and security in the hospital. General visiting hours are from 11:30am until 8:00pm daily. No more than two visitors should be in a patientís room at any one time, and visits should be limited to 30 minutes or less. Unless arrangements have been made for children in the immediate family, those under the age of 13 are not permitted above the first floor of the hospital. Please note that visiting guidelines vary in different departments.

Intensive Care Unit Visiting Guidelines

Visiting times for San Juan Regional Medical Centerís Intensive/Critical Care Unit are 24 hours a day, every two hours on the even hour for 30 minutes. In the interest of our patients, we ask that only members of the immediate family visit, and that only one or two persons visit at any one time. In addition, children under the age of thirteen are not allowed to visit unless special circumstances exist.

Outpatient Nursing Unit

Nursing services are available during the day to patients on an outpatient basis. Services include physician ordered treatments, such as intravenous (IV) therapy, blood transfusion, or wound care.

Pediatric Unit Visiting Guidelines

The Pediatrics unit at San Juan Regional Medical Center offers children and families a special area for the care and treatment of children under the age of 18. The Pediatric Unit allows visiting 24 hours a day for parents and grandparents of our patients. Visiting hours for all others are subject to the hospitalís general visiting hours, which are from 11:30am until 8:00pm. Sibling visitation in Pediatrics is from 4:00 to 8:00pm, however, children under the age of 13 must have permission from the nursing staff to visit their sibling.

Because the philosophy of the skilled pediatric nursing staff reflects the belief that family is the pediatric patientís most important connection, a parent or grandparent is welcome and encouraged to spend the night if at all possible. It is best, however, to make these arrangements in advance with the nursing staff, as other overnight visitation will not be allowed.
