Cardiology Services—an Overview
Cardiology services at San Juan Regional Medical Center combine both compassion and medical expertise. Areas of service include:
- Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The cardiovascular program integrates a complete range of diagnostic and treatment services. Diagnostic testing begins with non-invasive cardiology echo equipment and stress testing. If further testing and cardiac intervention are required, patients may be brought in to utilize the cardiac cath lab facilities. The lab is staffed with physicians and experienced staff who are prepared to provide optimum personalized treatment. A unit dedicated to the care of post-op cardiac patients is staffed with nurses who have completed additional courses in cardiac care.
An outstanding cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation department completes the program and provides service between the patient’s acute care needs and continued wellness.
Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
The San Juan Regional Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation program is designed to meet the need of the individual patient, depending upon the specific heart problem or disease. Active involvement of the patient and family is vital to the success of the program. Our friendly staff lead you through the program in a completely individual way, with the focus on your needs. Your team will consist of an RN, a dietician, a respiratory therapist and other specialists as needed.
The Program
The program is a supervised program for people who have either a congenital or acquired heart disease. The rehabilitation can often improve function, reduce symptoms, and improve the well-being of the patient and includes:
Controlled exercise and conditioning
Using treadmills, bicycles (upright and recumbent) and arm ergometers, you will be placed on a program to improve your conditioning. While you exercise, we monitor your blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation.
Education
Topics include anatomy and physiology so you can better understand heart or lung diseases and how to improve. Topics on nutrition, breathing techniques, medications and others are also offered.
Feedback to your physician
Periodic progress reports will be sent to your physician including your response to exercise (heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation).
Phase Two Program
After your initial rehabilitation, you may be placed in the structured, or Phase Two program. In this program, cardiac patients exercise three times a week for 12 weeks and pulmonary patients exercise 3 times a week for 8 weeks. The program is offered Monday through Thursday, and you may select any three days during those four which works best for your schedule. Your choice!
Phase Three Program
After completing Phase Two, you have the option of signing up for our maintenance program for a nominal cost. This program offers you the opportunity to exercise, while being monitored, three times a week. The program is offered Monday through Thursday, 6-11:30am and 1-3pm, and you may select any three of the four days that fits your schedule. The cost is $25 per month, or $30 for ten visits.
Cardiac Cath Lab Services
Complete cardiac diagnostic services are offered through San Juan Regional Medical Center’s Cardiac Cath lab with critical cardiac intervention available.
Cath Lab Services include:
- Diagnostic cardiac catherization
- Intravascular ultrasound
- Intravascular ultrasound
- Percutanious Coronary Intervention – balloon angioplasty, stenting
- Thrombectomy – Angio Jet, Export catheter
- Permanent Pacemaker – single, dual, biventricular leads
- Internal Cardiac Defibrillators
The Hospital's Cardiac Unit
The San Juan Regional Cardiac Care unit is dedicated to the care of post-op cardiac patients and is staffed with nurses who have completed additional courses in cardiac care. The floor has 23 patient private rooms, including many with balconies. This specialized unit also provides post procedure care for heart catheterization, pacemakers and other cardiac procedures.
All patients being treated in the unit have a heart monitor attached to their chests with sticky electrodes. This device monitors the electrical activity of the heart. The data collected by the heart monitor is sent to the nurses' station where it is continuously observed.
The Cardiac Care Unit is open to visitors 24 hours a day. At the nurse's discretion, visiting hours and number of visitors may be limited. Visitors may also be asked to step out for some procedures, or in the event of emergencies. Visitors under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
