FARMINGTON, NM (February 24, 2010) San Juan Regional Medical Center requests your help during this busy season. The hospital emergency room has been seeing many patients, both children and adults, with respiratory infections. As spring approaches, the hospital expects this trend to continue. By working together, we can help decrease the spread of infections. Our goal is to get you in to see a physician as soon as possible, but please be aware that wait times may be longer than usual.

San Juan Regional Medical Center urges everyone to use the same preventive measures we used during the H1N1 flu season. If you come to the emergency room with a cough and fever, please use the hand-sanitizing gel, masks and tissues available at the entrance. Also, please limit the number of people you bring with you. Family is important, but the fewer people exposed, the better. These simple things will help us to slow down the spread of respiratory infections. Thank you for helping.

FARMINGTON, NM (February 22, 2010) San Juan Regional Medical Center has received the Ascent Healthy Hospital Award for "outstanding performance in reducing environmental harm and improving overall hospital quality through medical device remanufacturing and reprocessing." Every year, Ascent Healthcare Solutions recognizes hospitals and hospital networks that achieve outstanding results from their reprocessing and remanufacturing programs. San Juan Regional Medical Center is one of only two hospitals in New Mexico to receive the award for 2009.

The award underscores the importance of looking at how hospital resources are used. San Juan Regional Medical Center was awarded the 2009 Healthy Hospital Award based on exceptional results from their remanufacturing and reprocessing program. In 2009, participation in this program reduced hospital supply costs by $270,831. At the same time, using remanufactured and reprocessed devices has reduced medical waste by 5,052 lbs.

Reprocessing and remanufacturing single-use devices stands out as an environmental practice that not only significantly reduces the amount of medical waste, but also reduces costs for the hospital – and these results are achieved immediately and with no capital investment. In the healthcare industry, reprocessing and remanufacturing have been hailed as breakthrough programs that uniquely realize the simultaneous demands for better resource utilization and more green practices.

Betty Holmes, manager of the hospital's central sterile processing and distribution department, said, "We reprocess single-use devices in most of our surgical services areas. We started reprocessing because it is a prudent use of resources and good for the environment." Representatives of Ascent Healthcare Solutions presented the award to the hospital's perioperative services department on February 22, 2010.

FARMINGTON, NM (December 31, 2009) A new display noting key events in San Juan Regional Medical Center's history will be unveiled at the hospital on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 2 pm. The history display consists of five art panels printed on canvas that were produced as part of the hospital's centennial celebration in 2010. The panels divide the hospital's history into five periods: Founding 1910-1932, Formation 1932-1952, Reaching Out 1952-1978, Reaching Higher 1978-2000 and A New Millennium 2000-present.

The display project replaces the current history display with a design that blends with the colors and décor of San Juan Regional Medical Center today. This unveiling event, which will be held near the hospital's café, La Ventana, is the first of a series of events to be held throughout 2010 to celebrate the hospital's 100th year of existence. The public is invited to attend.
