Radiology San Juan Regional Medical Center supports a number of education programs that lead to a certificate in a healthcare field where there is a large demand for trained technicians. Some of the programs are coordinated with other institutions and will require you to enroll at that institution and take classes. Some of the programs require few or no prerequisites, and some have higher entry requirements. All of the programs can be completed in two years or less (not counting time to fulfill prerequisites), and are in healthcare fields that are expected to continue growing well into the future.

Perioperative 101

The course is designed to train a Registered Nurse with no prior experience to be a fully functional Operating Room Nurse. Each participant will receive training from theory to practicum in sterile technique, pre, post and intra operative functions. The registered nurse will join San Juan Regional Medical Center operating room staff and completed the course as a staff member. After successful completion the RN will be guaranteed a job within the operating room as a staff nurse.

Medical Laboratory Technician

Medical Laboratory Technicians are the investigative detectives for physicians, performing laboratory tests vital in the detection and treatment and diagnosis of an illness. Additionally, students will learn to evaluate lab results, correlate with patient history, solve problems and work as a team member with staff to improve patient health and wellness. Laboratory theory in Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Urinalysis and Blood Bank will be covered in class and reinforced during clinical rotations in area hospitals.

Prerequisites: College freshman (100) level Math, Chemistry, English, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Biology.

Central Sterile Processing Technician

This program is designed to bring the layperson into the medical world by introducing them to the many processes to clean, sterilize and care for the instruments used in major and minor surgeries, the instrument descriptions, usage and assembly of instruments and sets. The candidate will learn basic Microbiology, medical terminology, Anatomy and Physiology as well as governing regulations and standards. They will be able to sit for certification after a minimum of 400 clinical hours of hands-on experience. After certification (CRCST) they may become a Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) as well.

Prerequisites: None, but Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology would be helpful.

Radiologic Technologist

A Radiologic Technologist takes diagnostic x-rays in a hospital or clinical setting. Patients include outpatients, inpatients, emergency room, operating room, and portables in the patient rooms. Career advancement could include doing exams in other modalities including, CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Interventional Radiography, Radiation Therapy, etc. Students are required to complete 336 hours of clinical education at San Juan Regional Medical Center a semester. They must enroll at Weber State University and go to Ogden, UT 3 times a semester for 2 days of classes. They also go to Cortez 2 times for an afternoon of class. Studying is on the student’s own time, and tests are taken online. Upon program completion, the student must successfully pass a National Registry exam.

Prerequisites: Freshman Composition, Advanced Composition, Introduction to Algebra, Anatomy and Physiology I and II.

Respiratory Therapist

A Respiratory Therapist is a highly trained professional specializing in the diagnostic, therapeutic, management and prevention of diseases associated with the cardiopulmonary (lungs and breathing) system. The program, offered through Pueblo Community College in Durango, CO., leads to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Respiratory Care. Classes are held in Durango, and graduates of the program become eligible for registry by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Students must enroll at Pueblo Community College, and the program consists of five semesters of theory, laboratory, and clinical internships in the techniques of respiratory care. The courses must be taken in sequence and completed with a grade ‘C’ or better. The natural science courses must also be completed with a grade of ‘C’ or better. Before being accepted into the program, students must pass a drug screening and background check.

Certified Surgical Technologist

This program, offered through San Juan College, is designed to instruct students in their understanding of the tasks and responsibilities of the Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room. Students must enroll at San Juan College and take required courses. Areas of study will include, but are not limited to, aseptic technique, positioning of patients, and preparation of instrumentation, pull of case carts, setting up rooms, assisting the surgeon during actual cases and the understanding of their role during surgery. With the completion of this program the student will be an ST, Surgical Technologist. Certification will still be required after completion of required cases.
